My reward for helping others through physical therapy is the “feedback” I receive from the satisfied clients. But had it not been for a chance of ‘Rolfing’ session earlier in his career, the former nationally ranked cyclist may never have had the opportunity to realize my life’s calling. At just 21 years old.
In 1967, I won two out of the 3 state championship races before enlisting to serve the country in the Army, where I continued to nurture my passion for cycling as part of the Army team. Six months and one spot short of making the olympic team later, I was ordered to serve in Vietnam from 1968-1969. Upon returning to Michigan, I completed my BA in Social Science at Michigan State University.
Fast forward to 1973, and I could still be found very involved in bicycling, both as a coach of The Oakland Velo Team, and as a racer. I was also very busy managing my own bike shop in Rochester, MI.
But as busy as this nationally ranked rider was, I took a friend’s suggestion to try a “Rolfing” session in order to improve on my performance. At that level, I always say, a few percentage points can make all the difference in the outcome of a race.
I won the state championships 13 times. And I was second in the national championships twice. Two times I came in Third. So the Rolfing really boosted my performance on the bike in that sense.
It wasn’t long til I decided to expand my bike-shop Rolfing to a more formal setting. But in order to do that, I knew I needed to go back to school. By 1995, I had not only completed my basic physical therapy requirements, but also completed my Master’s in Physical Therapy. At just 50-years-young, I was again, a college grad.
From there, I worked for three years at Providence Hospital before starting my own practice in 1998. Neil King Physical Therapy moved to its current location in 2005.
My most rewarding moments come when working on patients who have tried to seek treatment elsewhere. At Neil King Physical Therapy, his patients are made to feel welcomed
